Google Business Profile: the local-search basics for pool service
Claiming and optimizing the profile, categories, photos, posts, Q&A, and why it drives the local map pack.
Caio · PexelsClaiming Your Profile
Visit business.google.com and sign in with a Google account tied to the business. Search for the exact business name and address. If the profile already exists, request ownership through the verification process. For new listings, enter the business name, service address or service area, phone number, and website exactly as they appear on other directories. In both the United States and Canada, verification usually arrives by postcard mailed to the listed address within one to two weeks, though phone or email options may be available. Once verified, complete every field including hours, service descriptions, and attributes like wheelchair accessibility or senior discounts if applicable.
Optimizing the Profile
Ensure the business name, address, and phone number match across the website, social pages, and local directories. Add a short description of core services like weekly pool cleaning, filter repairs, and winterizing. Select attributes that reflect real offerings, such as mobile service or emergency response. Update hours seasonally because pool work often increases in warmer months. In Canada, include both English and French service descriptions where applicable. Review the profile weekly to confirm information is current.
Selecting Categories
Choose one primary category that best matches the main work, such as “Pool cleaning service” or “Swimming pool repair service.” Add up to nine secondary categories that cover related tasks like “Hot tub repair” or “Pool maintenance.” Avoid broadly defined options like “Home services” when specific choices exist. Primary and secondary choices influence how often the listing surfaces for specific searches, so test small changes and monitor performance data in the profile dashboard.
Adding Photos
Upload clear, well-lit images showing work performed. Include exterior shots of serviced pools, equipment close-ups, and before-and-after images of algae removal or tile cleaning. Aim for a steady flow of new photos every few weeks rather than a single large batch. Videos of pump replacements or water testing add further value. In both countries, listings with regular photo updates tend to rank higher than those left static.
Publishing Posts
Create posts sharing timely information like spring opening specials, reminders about chemical balancing, or notices about pool cover inspections. Each post can include a headline, short description, optional photo, and call-to-action button linking to the website or booking page. Schedule posts in advance for holidays or weather events that affect pool use. Keep the tone practical and direct, focusing on essential customer information rather than promotional language.
Managing Questions and Answers
Regularly monitor the questions section and answer inquiries within one or two days. Common questions cover pricing ranges, response times, and service area coverage. Provide clear, factual replies and include relevant details such as service area boundaries. Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews, which can indirectly improve profile activity.
Impact on Local Map Pack
The local map pack displays the top three to five listings for searches with location terms. A complete profile with accurate categories, recent photos, active posts, and prompt question responses increases the chances of appearing in that pack. Google uses these signals to determine relevance and freshness. Pool service businesses that keep profiles updated often see more calls and direction requests from nearby homeowners searching on mobile devices. Consistent effort across these areas compounds over time without requiring additional advertising spend.
